Curvilinear glass walkway provides inspiring views of park’s geological features from all angles
The 167-acre Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park in Portage County, Ohio, offers hiking trails, picnicking and some of the most unique natural scenery in the state. Visitors from across the region come to experience waterfalls, rugged cliff ledges, angled rock formations, and up-to-60-foot crevasses formed by a combination of erosion and shifting of large slump blocks.
The park’s newest amenity, the Falls Edge Glass Walkway, opened to the public in May 2025. The 137-foot-long pedestrian walkway winds through trees and over a large prehistoric chasm in the “ledges” area of the park, leading visitors to a viewing platform that overlooks the stunning Minnehaha Falls. Designed to provide a visual connection to nature by OHM Advisors and structural glass consultant Experiential Resources, LLC (ERi), the walkway is a safe and accessible way for park visitors of all ages to enjoy unique never-before-seen views of the topography and the valley below.
OHM Advisors provided survey/mapping, landscape architecture, structural engineering, and construction administration services for the structure. Additionally, the surveying team used a 360-degree static scanner to collect all horizontal and vertical features of the crevasse walls and bottom and the surrounding land. This provided a photo realistic basemap that was the foundation of the visualization modeling used for developing design concepts and plans.
