The Cleveland Midway was conceived as a network of connected, shared-use trails, separating cyclists from vehicular traffic vertically and with landscape and streetscape treatments. The first segment of this network runs along Superior Avenue, connecting Cleveland’s near east side with downtown, along 2.4 miles of former trolley line. The trail will replace that buried line in the middle of the road, making it the first facility of its kind in Ohio.
OHM Advisors served as a subconsultant on the Superior Avenue segment of the Cleveland Midway system. The team’s responsibilities included public engagement, landscape architecture, streetscape design, signage and pavement marking design, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC). These efforts helped establish a solid foundation for future phases of the broader Cleveland Midway network.
To enhance public awareness, OHM Advisors developed and managed the Cleveland Midway website (clevelandmidway.com) and established and led a comprehensive public engagement process. This effort connected key stakeholders to the project process, and integrated public input into the design.
In collaboration with the city, OHM Advisors worked to develop streetscape standards to ensure that all future Cleveland Midway facilities are easily identifiable. These standards covered signage and wayfinding, color families, low-maintenance plantings, bollards, and lighting elements.
