Orion Township Corridor Improvement Authority - Brown Road Widening Project

Client

Orion Township

Location

Orion Township, MI

The Charter Township of Orion partnered with OHM Advisors to assist them in bringing the vision of their newly created Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) and its reimagination of historically underutilized land to life. The Brown Road widening project preceded the larger Baldwin Road Reconstruction project—with its goal to improve the Brown Road corridor east of Baldwin and north of Interstate 75 as an integral first step in turning the area into an “Innovation Zone” and leading the Township into its future.

Our transportation engineers designed a plan for road expansion that included construction of two new lanes along the north side of the existing roadway in addition to cold milling and resurfacing of the three existing lanes. Special circumstances along the north side of Brown Road included the need for partial water main relocation; curb, gutter and storm sewer improvements; and the handling of significant grading impacts to businesses which required extensive coordination. Our team helped the Township obtain over 24 temporary and permanent property acquisitions in an expedited process that we completed in less than six months. Our final design plans also included details on maintenance of traffic, pavement markings and signage, and plans for a traffic signal near the Menard’s shopping center entrance.

With this important infrastructure now in place, the Township is well-positioned for continuing future development of the corridor as a mixed-use destination blending high-tech office space, neighborhood-style retail, high-density residential living, pocket parks and streetscape connectivity. In tandem with the related Baldwin Road project, the improved corridor will help generate economic growth in the area and foster greater community connection for years to come.
