Stephan Maxe, PE, a project engineer in OHM Advisors’ Transportation group, has been named the 2022 Young Member of the Year by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Michigan Section (ITE). The annual award recognizes members under age 35 who have already made an impact on the profession, have demonstrated the ability to lead the next generation, and have implemented innovative techniques to solve transportation problems.

A valued member of the firm’s Transportation group in its Livonia, Michigan office, Maxe’s project experience spans the majority of traffic engineering specializations. He has led efforts for maintaining traffic plans, traffic signal design, road safety audits and signal optimization with a strong emphasis on balancing constructability, operations and safety. He has performed traffic impact studies for state, municipal and retail clients and is a firm leader in the use of traffic engineering software and related new technology, which he introduces to project teams to strengthen existing processes. His project innovation was especially valuable during the global pandemic as he championed the transition of project methods to allow for effective virtual collaboration.

In addition to Maxe’s impressive breadth of traffic engineering knowledge, he is a leader on individual projects teams and beyond, as a frequent mentor for both interns and recent graduate engineers. His exceptional leadership skills are best displayed in his work helping young engineers find their individual discipline passions as they navigate the transition from student to professional. Maxe holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Wayne State University and is a member of the Michigan Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
