Elbel Field Synthetic Turf, University of Michigan

Long used by the University of Michigan marching band as a practice facility, an asphalt lot on the north side of Elbel Field Complex is now the site of a new synthetic turf field. Sized to meet NCAA football field requirements, it serves as a practice area for the band and a recreation area for other student organizations.

Located in a floodplain which suffered soil and groundwater contamination, the project was not without its challenges. But in the end, our site design team met zero rise requirements, university design guidelines and U of M OSEH NPDES requirements for storm water quantity and quality. Better yet, we helped create a lasting resource for enjoyment and health at this Big Ten University with 40,000 students.
