Each year the Massachusetts Association of Technical Rescue Specialists (MATRS) holds an annual seminar to enhance and promote the strategic goals for mobilization of technical rescue teams throughout the Commonwealth.
Craig Dashner, construction manager at OHM Advisors, was invited as guest speaker to present a summary of the current state of trench rescue shoring – including myths, facts and folklore. In this two hour session, conference attendees will learn how to calculate potential soil forces and compare those forces to the capacities of commonly used rescue shoring equipment and shoring systems.
Relying on decades of experience designing and inspecting bridges, Craig uses his structural expertise and cool-headed leadership skills to evaluate collapsed and partially collapsed structures and direct necessary shoring to keep the rescue workers as safe as possible during rescue missions. He also volunteers his time as a structural specialist with Michigan Task Force 1 (the state’s U.S. Army Reserves operation).
